Barbara felt satisfaction and mortification compete in her breast. The wretched innkeeper deserved everything he got. He’d overcharged them for a room full of dirty hay, urine, and fleas.

Then again, torching the man’s inn – well, that seemed a step too far. On the other hand, who was she to criticize Carwyn when she’d been prepared to throttle him? An impulse she was still ashamed of, even now.

Finally, they reached the shop district of Thebes, where they found an apothecary. An apothecary who, for some reason, spoke with a highland lilt.

Where did Vance find these voice actors? Barbara wondered. Well, the British Isles, obviously. But – why?

They explained their problem, and were told a solution did indeed exist. All of Barbara’s previous sympathies for the innkeeper vanished when the apothecary quoted a truly iniquitous sum for a single vial of his flea treatment.

The apothecary also mentioned, not quite casually, that he had a potion to eliminate stink. And as Barbara hadn’t yet had an opportunity for a bath, she bought one of those, too.

Carwyn tried to mooch a free vial of flea bane from her, complaining again that he had no coin. But she remembered his disappearance the night before, and his smug and triumphant return. “You can pay for your own,” she told him. “Or you can deal with fleas.”

Grumbling, he suddenly remembered he had enough for the vial after all.

The apothecary pocketed their coin and handed over the medicine, chattering away as he did so. “Have ye heard the news?”

“About the academy?” Mdjai answered with a nod. “Yes. Terrible business.”

“Ach, no, though I ken all about that too. No, this happened just this morning. Some vandals torched an inn.”

“No,” Carwyn said, affecting shock.

“How terrible,” Barbara managed, ignoring the twinge of conscience that accompanied her schadenfreude.

“Aye. The wee man who runs the place scarce got out with the kilt and sandals on his body. Ruined, he is. Mind, not that it couldn’t happen to a more deserving chap. He’s a skinflint and a bounder, and no mistake. Still, have you ever heard of such a thing?”

Carwyn shook his head, murmuring, “People these days. No respect for anyone or anything. That’s what’s wrong with society.”

“And that’s the truth,” the apothecary nodded primly. “Positively lawless.”

The elf, looking quite smug, seemed ready to ham it up some more, so Barbara cut in to agree. “Very true. Well, we should be on our way.” She wanted to be out of there as quickly as possible, partly to silence her self-satisfied companion before he said anything that might get them in trouble, but also just in case the chatty apothecary had heard some description of the vandals in question.

There couldn’t be too many motley bands like theirs roaming the city.

Thanking them for their custom, the apothecary waved them off. They made their way out of town, Mdjai once more in the lead.
